Bill Alston
Engineering Analyst, Computational Mechanics
Bill Alston is a broad technologist and innovation leader with creative strengths in multiple areas of computational mechanics (mathematics and specialized software for predicting real world behavior) for these fundamental disciplines:
• Linear and Nonlinear Structural Mechanics, including elastoplastic and hyperelastic materials, gap-contact and snap-through phenomena, typically solved using FEA (finite element analysis) techniques.
• Heat Transfer, including nonlinear conduction, convection and radiation in complex systems. (FEA)
• Drug Diffusion in Extended-Delivery Drug Implants, including drug-impregnated silicones. (FEA)
• CFD (computational fluid dynamics), including pulmonary drug delivery, coupled flow/diffusion, non-Newtonian fluids, vortex induction, turbulence, flow in electro-chemical impedance spectroscopy, and electronics cooling.
• FEA applied to multi-coupled systems, including transient nonlinear
thermoelectrical coupled phenomena that have included quantum tunneling, regenerative avalanche, and the mathematics of chaos as applied to spatial randomness of materials
With 97 patents (issued and pending) in 20 different fields, Bill has developed products ranging from PVAC solar modules and solar-thermal heat exchangers to pulmonary drug delivery devices, the SX-70 camera, coronary angiographic catheters, cognitive function biofeedback electronics, drug packaging, multi-layer coating systems, endobronchial therapy, and quantum tunneling polymeric materials.
Bill holds BS and MS degrees in mechanical engineering from Tufts University.
