I am a Ugandan with a Master of Science in Immunology and Clinical Microbiology from Makerere University, Uganda, a Master of Science degree by Research (MScRes) in Sustainable African Futures from the University of Edinburgh, Scotland and a Postgraduate Diploma in Medical Education from Makerere University. My academic and professional journey has been driven by a profound commitment to addressing global health challenges, particularly TB, which continues to significantly impact vulnerable populations worldwide. My research passion is rooted in my Masterβs project, where I investigated the diagnostic accuracy of Mycobacterium tuberculosis DNA using Totally Optimized PCR (TOP) in paucibacillary individuals. This experience underscored the complexity of TB diagnosis in patients with low bacterial burdens and inspired my dedication to advancing TB diagnostics and treatment strategies. Complementing this, I have participated in multiple impactful research projects, including the Trace Ultra Result iNsight in TB Screening (TURN-TB) Project under the Uganda Tuberculosis Implementation Research Consortium (U-TIRC), Tongue Swab Tuberculosis Diagnostic Yield Study under World Alliance for Lung and Intensive Care Medicine in Uganda (WALIMU), Mobile Microscopy for Tuberculosis Diagnosis Using AI under Makerere University AI Health Lab, TB Screening Improves Preventive Therapy Uptake (TBSCRIPT) under Infectious Diseases Research Collaboration (IDRC) and Predicting the Future: Incipient Tuberculosis (PREFIT STUDY) under Makerere University Biomedical Research Centre (MAK-BRC). These projects have expanded my technical expertise in TB diagnostics, laboratory research, and project management while fostering a multidisciplinary approach to solving health challenges. In 2023, I had the privilege of joining the Wits-Edinburgh Sustainable African Futures (WESAF) Doctoral Programme's first part, the Masters by Research (MScRes) in Sustainable African Futures which ended in August, 2024. This program offered a unique opportunity to broaden my knowledge beyond the biomedical sciences and explore the broader social, economic, and environmental determinants of health. It offered a comprehensive curriculum focused on critical aspects of research, including data collection, formulating independent research, theorizing research, and understanding the politics of knowledge production. It also delved into researching sustainability in Africa, literature review in research design, interdisciplinary approaches, challenge-based research design, working with existing quantitative data, communicating findings effectively, and required submitting a dissertation at the end of the course. Through this program, I gained a comprehensive understanding of interdisciplinary/multidisciplinary research, theoretical frameworks, methodologies, and research formulation, all of which are crucial for addressing complex health challenges in a holistic manner. These skills are invaluable to me, as they complement the extensive hands-on laboratory expertise I have acquired over the years while working on various research projects.
