Dr Yasir Jallawi Mahmod Karkar is a Senior Research Assistant in Pharmaceutical Sciences at the University of Sunderland with expertise in advanced drug delivery systems, pharmaceutical formulation, and additive manufacturing technologies. He completed his PhD in Pharmaceutical Science at the University of Sunderland, where he developed innovative 3D-printed personalised medicines, including the FlexiPill platform for tailored drug dosing and drug-release profiles. His research spans pharmaceutical formulation development, 3D printing, translational drug delivery, and personalised medicine, with experience in both academic and industrial settings. During his time at Evotec (UK) Ltd., he worked on enabling formulations for preclinical drug candidates, including amorphous solid dispersions, nanosuspensions, lipid-based formulations, spray-dried dispersions, and biopharmaceutics assessments to support translational drug development. Alongside his research activities, Yasir has contributed to teaching, supervision, and research training in pharmaceutics, analytical sciences, and pharmaceutical technologies in both the United Kingdom and Iraq. He has presented his research at major international conferences, including the Controlled Release Society (CRS), AAPS PharmSci 360, and the Academy of Pharmaceutical Sciences (APS), and was awarded Best Presenter at the University of Sunderland Postgraduate Conference in 2024. His current research focuses on developing patient-centred drug delivery technologies for rare and neglected diseases. He is particularly interested in sustained-release ocular drug delivery systems for ocular cystinosis and the application of advanced pharmaceutical manufacturing technologies to improve treatment adherence, reduce treatment burden, and enhance patient outcomes.
