Dabigatran, marketed under brand names including Pradaxa, is an anticoagulant used to treat and prevent blood clots and to prevent stroke in patients with atrial fibrillation, including prevention of clots after hip or knee replacement and in those with a history of previous clots. It serves as an alternative to warfarin that does not require routine blood monitoring. A meta-analysis of seven studies found no added benefit over warfarin in preventing ischemic stroke, though dabigatran carried a lower risk of intracranial bleeding and a higher risk of gastrointestinal bleeding compared with warfarin. It is administered orally, with bleeding and gastritis among the common side effects, and other possible effects including bleeding around the spine.
