Manjiri S. Gharat is a committed pharmacy professional and a passionate advocate for the evolving role of pharmacists in healthcare. She currently serves as the Principal I/C of Prin. K. M. Kundnani Pharmacy Polytechnic, Ulhasnagar, India. With a career spanning over two decades, she has made a lasting impact both nationally and internationally through leadership, innovation, and commitment to public health. Nationally, she has held several prominent roles in the Indian Pharmaceutical Association (IPA), including Vice-President and Chairperson of the Community Pharmacy Division (CPD) from 2012 to 2024, after serving as CPD Secretary from 2006 to 2012. Internationally, she has contributed significantly to the International Pharmaceutical Federation (FIP) as Vice-President, Vice-President of its Community Pharmacy Section (2012–2020), and Co-Chair of the FIP AMR Commission (2020–2024). She currently represents India as FIP India Envoy and Vice-President of the SEARPharm Forum. A transformative force in the profession, Manjiri has led several pioneering initiatives that have redefined the pharmacist’s role in India—from traditional dispensers to vital healthcare professionals. Among her landmark contributions is the integration of community pharmacists into the National Tuberculosis (TB) Programme of the Government of India. Starting with just seven pharmacists in Mumbai in 2006, this initiative expanded nationwide under her leadership and culminated in a historic MoU between IPA and the Central TB Division of the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare in 2012. An accomplished trainer, speaker, and mentor, she has conducted hundreds of training sessions and delivered over 1,000 lectures across India, often through IPA or in collaboration with pharmaceutical companies, state pharmacy councils, and chemist associations. Her efforts have significantly contributed to the visibility and impact of IPA at both national and international levels. Manjiri has also worked closely with the Pharmacy Council of India (PCI), contributing to critical initiatives such as the revision of the D.Pharm syllabus (ER 2020), the implementation of a bridge course, and active participation in the PCI AMR committee. Beyond professional advocacy, she is deeply committed to Consumer Medicine Education, writing regularly in leading Marathi newspapers like Loksatta and Maharashtra Times, and appearing frequently on Doordarshan(Television) and Akashvani (Radio) for public health awareness. She is also the author of two widely appreciated books in Marathi: Aushadhbhaan and Arogyanama. Her contributions have been recognized through numerous accolades, including being the first woman pharmacy professional from India to be honored as a Fellow of the International Pharmaceutical Federation (FFIP) and recipient of the prestigious Ishidate Award by FAPA. She also received the “Best Professional Award from professional association” the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, for her work in the TB sector. Having traveled to over 28 countries for professional engagements, she continues to expand the global footprint of Indian pharmacy. Under her leadership, the IPA Community Pharmacy Division has become a model of impactful, sustainable professional practice, building robust networks with government agencies, industry, academia, healthcare professionals, NGOs, and the public. Early in her career, a leading English daily described her as a “woman on a mission”—a title she has upheld with unwavering dedication, passion, and energy throughout her extraordinary journey in pharmacy.
