Associate Professor Dr. Naowarat Suthamnatpong, D.V.M., Ph.D., DTBVM
Associate Professor Dr. Naowarat Suthamnatpong is a veterinary pharmacologist and toxicologist with extensive academic, research, and professional experience in Thailand and abroad. She received her Doctor of Veterinary Medicine (D.V.M.) degree from Chulalongkorn University in 1989 and began her career as a veterinary surgeon in the Veterinary and Remount Department of the Royal Thai Army, where she was commissioned as a first lieutenant.
In 1991, she was awarded a Japanese Government (MEXT) Scholarship to pursue doctoral studies at Osaka Prefecture University, Japan. She completed her Ph.D. in Veterinary Pharmacology in 1995. Her doctoral research, entitled “Non-adrenergic, Non-cholinergic Inhibitory Neuromuscular Transmission of Rat Colon,” focused on neuropharmacological mechanisms of smooth muscle regulation. During her training, she developed expertise in in vitro smooth muscle pharmacology, electrophysiology, intracellular second messenger assays, and membrane potential analysis.
In 1994, she undertook advanced molecular biology training at the Biotechnology Center, The Ohio State University, USA, where she worked on sodium–potassium ATPase chimeric constructs for expression in Drosophila melanogaster.
Following her graduation, she joined Dainippon Sumitomo Pharma Co., Ltd. as a researcher in drug discovery, focusing on anti-inflammatory and immunosuppressive drug development using both in vitro and in vivo models.
In 1997, she returned to Chulalongkorn University as a lecturer in the Department of Pharmacology, Faculty of Veterinary Science. She was promoted to associate professor in 2018 and served the university until her retirement from government service. Since February 2026, she has continued her academic career at the Princess of Naradhiwas University Veterinary College, Walailak University.
Her research spans veterinary pharmacology and toxicology, including:
- Neuropharmacology of gastrointestinal smooth muscle
- Immunomodulatory effects of medicinal plants
- Toxicological evaluation using zebrafish models
- Anticancer effects of herbal extracts
- Drug-induced injury in small animals
She has authored or co-authored:
- 16 international peer-reviewed research articles
- Multiple review articles in veterinary pharmacology and molecular medicine
- 34+ conference presentations (national and international)
- 2 editions of a textbook on Veterinary Toxicology
Her recent scholarly work includes publications in The Thai Journal of Veterinary Medicine, Journal of Pharmacy and Pharmacognosy Research, and other peer-reviewed journals.
Dr. Suthamnatpong has extensive teaching experience at undergraduate, master’s, and doctoral levels in veterinary pharmacology, toxicology, molecular pharmacology, immunopharmacology, and pharmacotherapy. She has supervised multiple master’s theses and undergraduate research projects.
Professionally, she is
- A licensed first-class veterinarian in Thailand
- Diplomate of the Thai Board of Veterinary Medicine (Internal Medicine)
- An examiner for the Veterinary Council of Thailand
- A member of national committees on rational drug use and laboratory animal ethics
