Shinya Harusawa was born in Nara City (Japan) in 1954. He received his education at Osaka University of Pharmaceutical Sciences (OUPS). He received his Ph.D. under the supervision of Prof. Takayuki Shioiri at Nagoya City University in 1982. He was engaged in a postdoctoral position at Virginia Tech and Florida State University working on the total synthesis of taxol from 1984 to 1986 under the supervision of Prof. Robert A. Holton. After returning OUPS, he joined to Prof. Takushi Kurihara’s research group and became a full Professor in 2006. He retired from OUPS in 2019 and became an Emeritus Professor in 2020. Shinya Harusawa received the Pharmaceutical Society of Japan (PSJ) Kansai Branch Award for Young Scientists in 1992 and PSJ Award for Division Scientific Contribution in 2019. His research fields include the development of new synthetic reactions using hetero-heavy atoms and their application to synthesis of biofunctional molecules. His hobbies are reading Japanese literature, visiting art museums and places of historical interests, and iaidō practice.
