French national research organisation with its head office in Paris, founded in 1939 and the largest basic research body in Europe, working under the ministry of research. Runs and funds more than a thousand laboratories, most of them joint units with universities, across chemistry, biology, physics, engineering, environment and the humanities, including institutes working on medicinal chemistry, structural biology and drug delivery, and manages patents, spin-off companies and industrial partnerships.
