American private historically black academic health sciences centre at Nashville in Tennessee, founded in 1876 and the country's largest private historically black institution training health professionals. Runs schools of medicine, dentistry, graduate studies and applied computational sciences, teaches the doctor of medicine, dental surgery and graduate degrees in biomedical sciences and pharmacology, works with Nashville General Hospital for clinical teaching, and carries out research in cancer, health disparities, infectious disease and pharmacology with its own laboratories and clinical trials.
