American drug discovery company at Princeton in New Jersey, founded in 1993 on combinatorial chemistry and encoded compound libraries, which later became a small molecule discovery company with its own clinical programmes. Ran partnerships with several large pharmaceutical companies, spun its software business out as Accelrys in 2004, and was bought by Ligand Pharmaceuticals in December 2008 for about seventy million dollars.
