Deputy Speaker Nam In-sun Holds Forum on Comfort Women History and State Responsibility

On April 4, Deputy Speaker Nam In-sun (Democratic Party, Seoul Songpa‑byung) hosted a discussion titled “Memory and Record of Japanese Military Comfort Women History, State Responsibility” in Seminar Room 1 of the National Assembly building. The meeting was organized as the number of surviving comfort‑women victims has dwindled to five, prompting a call to systematically preserve and utilize survivor testimonies, scattered domestic and international records, and research outcomes. The forum also addressed the necessity of establishing a national foundation—proposed as the Women’s Human Rights Peace Foundation—to support the preservation effort and promote women’s rights. Attendees included Nam In-sun and members of the National Assembly’s Gender Equality and Family Committee: Baek Hye‑ryeon, Lee Su‑jin, Kim Nam‑geun, Lee Kwang‑hee, Lee Yeon‑hee, Jeon Jin‑suk, Kwak Sang‑eon, Park Ji‑hye, Lee Joo‑hee, Jeon Eun‑su, Jeong Chun‑saeng, and Son Sol, among others. The discussion highlighted the state’s responsibility to ensure that the historical record of the comfort‑women issue is maintained and accessible for future generations, and to support initiatives that uphold women’s human rights and peace.
