A research team led by Dr. Anders Green at Denmark’s Steno Diabetes Center used existing data to forecast the global burden of type 1 diabetes through 2049. The study estimates that the number of patients worldwide will grow from roughly 9.4 million today to about 12.1 million by 2049, representing an increase of around 30%. In the same period, the incidence of new cases is expected to rise by approximately 14%.
The researchers also highlighted that the pattern of growth will differ by country income level. In high‑income nations such as the United States, Australia and the United Kingdom, genetic factors, environmental influences and higher diagnostic rates are expected to drive the observed increases.
