The Korea Disease Control and Prevention Agency announced on April 4 that it will replace the current Mycobacterium tuberculosis genotyping system with a whole‑genome sequencing (WGS)‑based platform. The new analysis framework is intended to pinpoint transmission chains more precisely, especially when direct patient contact cannot be confirmed through epidemiological investigation. Korea reported approximately 17,000 new TB cases last year. The government’s goal is to reduce the incidence to below 20 cases per 100,000 people by 2027, and the rapid identification of transmission links is a key component of this strategy.
