A recent study indicates that depression may disrupt the brain's ability to generate new neurons. Researchers from Columbia University Department of Psychiatry and the New York State Psychiatric Institute analyzed postmortem hippocampal tissue from patients with major depressive disorder (MDD) and healthy control subjects. The analysis revealed that while neural stem cells are still present, their progression to mature neurons is impeded, suggesting a mechanistic link between depressive pathology and alterations in brain regions governing memory, learning, and emotional regulation.
