Every vial of vaccine or temperature-sensitive medicine distributed in Ethiopia relies on an unbroken chain of cold storage. A single temperature drop can compromise life-saving treatments. My job is to make sure that never happens.
Working as a Cold Chain & Biomedical Engineering Specialist hired by JSI embedded within EPSS, I oversee the critical technical infrastructure supporting all 20 national hubs. From heavy-duty industrial cold and freezer rooms to ultra-low temperature freezers, I ensure our national storage capacity remains highly resilient through rigorous, systematic preventive and corrective maintenance. But static storage is only half the battle. To secure the "last mile" of delivery, I manage the mechanical uptime of over 30 specialized cold transport vans and lead the digital tracking of Remote Temperature Monitoring Devices (RTMD) across the entire country, maintaining 24/7 data visibility over our inventory.
Beyond the hardware, I believe the most sustainable way to secure a resilient national health system is by investing in people. Through JSI and EPSS, I dedicate a significant portion of my time to authoring technical training manuals and conducting capacity-building initiatives for junior biomedical engineers—strengthening the technical workforce that will safeguard Ethiopia's healthcare future.
