Swedish industrial group built on the explosives business founded by Alfred Nobel, which by the late twentieth century covered chemicals, paints, explosives, pharmaceuticals through Kabi and Pharmacia and other businesses. It merged with Akzo of the Netherlands in 1994 to form Akzo Nobel, now a paints and coatings company whose former pharmaceutical arm Organon passed to Schering-Plough and then Merck.
