Portuguese public university in Faro in the Algarve, created in 1979 and merged with the region's polytechnic in 1988, with campuses at Gambelas, Penha and Portimão. Runs a Faculty of Medicine and Biomedical Sciences teaching medicine and biomedical sciences with the Algarve hospital centre, faculties of sciences and technology with biochemistry, biology and chemistry and a school of health with pharmacy technology, nursing and dietetics, and carries out research at the Centre for Marine Sciences and the Algarve Biomedical Center on marine natural products, biotechnology and translational medicine.
