Dr. McCarthy is a Clinical Associate Professor at the Rutgers Ernest Mario School of Pharmacy (EMSOP), a Board Certified Psychiatric Pharmacist, and provides direct patient care to an underserved population of patients at Henry J. Austin Health Center (HJAHC), a Federally Qualified Health Center that follows an Integrated Behavioral Healthcare approach to care delivery. Dr. McCarthy has a broad background in psychopharmacology and research, with research focused on the impact of adding a clinical pharmacist to care in outpatient settings for chronic disease management (CDM), including assessing to what extend clinical pharmacists can influence clinical markers of disease control, quality of life, healthcare utilization, satisfaction with care, and patient and provider knowledge. These research projects have spanned disease states ranging from diabetes and hypertension to depression and anxiety disorders, among others. Dr. McCarthy as served as PI and co-PI on several grant-funded research studies, including single and multi-site studies and randomized controlled trials. Dr. McCarthy's expertise in the field has been nationally recognized resulting in invitations to share experience in national professional forums, including several presentations on the role of psychiatric pharmacists in primary care settings, serve on advisory committees, such as the American Pharmacists Association Telehealth Advisory Committee, and participate in rigorous peer-review, such as via an appointment as a scientific reviewer and advisor for the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) and Prevention National Center for Injury Prevention and Control Extramural Research Program.
