Ethyl cellulose (EC) is the ethyl ether of cellulose, a derivative in which ethoxy groups replace hydroxyl groups, available in different molecular weights and viscosities. It appears as white, odorless, tasteless granules or powder, readily soluble in toluene or ether, soluble in dichloromethane, slightly soluble in ethyl acetate and methanol, and insoluble in water, glycerol and propylene glycol. It is stable and resistant to alkali and salt but more sensitive to acid than cellulose ester, with solution viscosity that increases with concentration and varies by solvent.
