Acyclovir is a synthetic purine nucleoside analogue used mainly against infections caused by herpes simplex virus, covering initial or recurrent skin, mucous-membrane, and genital infections as well as HSV infections in immunocompromised patients. It is the first-choice treatment for HSV encephalitis, outperforming arabinosine in reducing morbidity and mortality, and is also used for herpes zoster, Epstein-Barr virus, and chickenpox in immunocompromised patients. Applied topically to the skin, it is only minimally absorbed.
