CCS (croscarmellose sodium), marketed by Accent as Acrocell, is an internally cross-linked sodium carboxymethyl cellulose polymer. Its cross-linked structure makes it insoluble, hydrophilic and highly absorbent, with strong fibrous water-wicking capacity, and it improves formulation bioavailability through enhanced drug dissolution and disintegration; the related grade E468 cross-linked sodium carboxymethyl cellulose also serves as a food emulsifier. Applications include rapid disintegration in tablets, capsules and granules; effective combination with insoluble fillers/binders such as MCC and DCP; suitability for non-starch-based formulations; fast, easily achieved tablet dissolution even at low use levels; consistent tablet hardness and long-term dissolution stability; and use in solid dosage forms, vitamins and other nutritional products.
