The main focus of my research is to evaluate the relationship between helical flow, disturbed shear (DS) and the development of intimal hyperplasia (IH) in arteriovenous fistulas (AVF). AVF are the most common type of vascular access used to facilitate haemodialysis in patients suffering from kidney failure. However, they suffer from high primary failure rates due to the development of IH, which is believed to occur in areas of the AVF that experience DS.
