专业摘要
As a basic scientist for last 30 years, I am involved in understanding the pathophysiology of the glomerular filtration barrier function. Glomerular filtration barrier like Blood Brain Barrier (BBB) is unique in structure and plays critical role in controlling micro and macromolecular permeability. I developed an in vitro assay to study the glomerular filtration barrier function. Using this method we studied the direct effect of various biological agents including reactive oxygen species, matrix degrading metalloproteases, platelet activating factor and various cytokines (TNF-α, TGF-β) on glomerular filtration barrier function. Using this method, our group is currently involved in identifying the putative causative factor for the recurrent focal segmental glomerulosclerosis (FSGS). As an early investigator in the field of traumatic brain injury, my current research focus is in understanding and defining the role of Breast Cancer Resistance Protein (BCRP), a specific ATP-binding cassette super-family of transporters in removal of free hemin from brain known to be toxic to neurons. Understanding role of BCRP will facilitate in development of strategies to attenuate the secondary neuronal injury and improve neurological functions after TBI.
