My passion for chemistry began when I was in Secondary School and has influenced my career decisions to date, including my choice of undergraduate degree course, summer work placements and my decision to pursue a PhD. My current research area is in the synthesis of conducting hydrogels, specifically incorporating conductivity into pHEMA (poly(2-hydroxyethyl methacrylate acid) using inkjet printing technology and electropolymerisation. The aim of this work is develop the next generation of electroactive materials capable of acting as improved interfaces between artificial electrode materials and soft tissue. The availability of this technology would be both novel and cutting edge thereby representing a paradigm shift in the way biomedical neural interfaces, biosensors and electro-stimulated drug delivery platforms are designed.
