My primary research focus is on clinical pharmacology. I have been working and living in Chiang Mai (Thailand) for the last 20 years. During this time I have been actively involved in HIV clinical research studies, primarily focused on mother and child health. The clinical pharmacokinetic studies I have performed have included adults, adolescents, children, pregnant women and newborns, and were aimed at optimizing antiretroviral drug dosing. I have also been actively involved in developing and conducting studies within the NIH/DAIDS/NICHD-funded ‘International Pediatric Maternal Adolescent AIDS Clinical Trials’ (IMPAACT) network and within the Paediatric European Network for Treatment of AIDS (PENTA). Also, to support the pharmacokinetic studies undertaken, I have established a pharmacology laboratory at the Faculty of Associated Medical Sciences at Chiang Mai University. This laboratory contains state-of-the art equipment and is ISO 15189 accredited. This laboratory supports studies for the IMPAACT and PENTA networks, as well as investigator initiated studies. I am also interested in population pharmacokinetic modelling and simulation studies. I have published several population pharmacokinetic models using pooled data sets from different countries. The primarily aim of these models have been to investigate novel doses in pregnant women, newborns and children using simulation studies and identify sources of inter-patient variability. I am currently a member of the World Health Organization (WHO)-Pediatric Antiretroviral Working Group which guides the development of dosing recommendations for the WHO HIV Antiretroviral Treatment Guidelines for Infants and Children.
