American non-profit research institute at Research Triangle Park in North Carolina, founded in 1958 by Duke University, North Carolina State University and the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. Carries out contract research for government agencies, foundations and industry in drug discovery and development, medicinal chemistry and pharmacology, analytical chemistry and forensic toxicology, clinical trials and epidemiology, survey research, global health and environmental science, and runs its own laboratories with a controlled substances research programme.
