The traditional requirement for extensive comparative clinical trials that has long underpinned the global biosimilar development market is fading. The comparative clinical efficacy study (CES), once considered the biggest hurdle for biosimilar developers, is being reduced in scope.
Instead, regulatory frameworks worldwide are being overhauled to prioritize sophisticated quality analyses and pharmacokinetic (PK) data. A report released by the Korea Bio‑pharmaceutical Association (KoBIA) notes that the former uniform three‑step development pathway—comparative analytical assessment, comparative PK study, and comparative clinical efficacy study—is rapidly transitioning to a scientific evaluation system tailored to the specific characteristics of each product.
This shift aims to streamline biosimilar development, allowing faster market entry while maintaining safety and efficacy through more targeted assessments.
