Dr. Andersen works part-time as a Senior Research Fellow, ScitoVation LLC in Research Triangle Park, NC and as an independent consultant. Previously, he served as Chief Science Officer atThe Hamner Institutes (2002-2016), Professor of Environmental Health at Colorado State (1999 – 2002) and Vice-President of the K.S. Crump Group of ICF Kaiser International Consulting (1994-1998). Between 1971 and 1994, he held positions in toxicology research and research management in the federal government (DoD and US EPA) and in private industry (Chemical Industry Institute of Toxicology). His career focused on developing biologically realistic models of the uptake, distribution, metabolism, and biological effects of drugs and toxic chemicals and applying these models in safety assessments and quantitative health risk assessments. Dr. Andersen is author or co-author of some 500 papers, 60 book chapters and numerous reports and abstracts. He awards include the Herbert Stokinger Award (American Conference of Industrial Hygienists, 1988), the Kenneth Morgareidge Award (International Life Sciences Institute, 1989), the George Scott Award (Toxicology Forum, 1993), the Mildred A. Christian Award (2016) from the Academy of Toxicological Sciences and the Frank R. Blood (1982), Achievement (1984), Arnold J. Lehman (2004) and Merit Awards (2016) from the Society of Toxicology. From 2004 through 2007, Dr. Andersen was a member of a US National Academy of Sciences Committee on toxicity testing of environmental agents. In recognition of the committee report, “Toxicity Testing in the 21st Century: A Vision and A Strategy”, Dr. Andersen and the other committee members received the 2008 North American Alternative Award from the Humane Society of the United States, the 2009 Recognition Award from the Center for Alternatives to Animal Testing, and the 2009 Honour Award from the Doerenkamp-Zbinden Foundation for Alternatives in Biomedicine. In 2012, Dr. Andersen received the William and Eleanor Cave Award from the Alternatives Research and Development Foundation for “his tireless advancements of the recommendations of the 2007 NAS report on toxicity testing”. Dr. Andersen is board certified in industrial hygiene (now in retired-status) and in toxicology and a Fellow of the Academy of Toxicological Sciences.
