Dr Juan Antonio Tamayo-Ramos is currently Tenured Scientist at the Institute of Agrochemistry and Food Technology (IATA-CSIC), a public research institue within the Spanish Research Council. Previously, he has successfully applied knowledge and skills gained during his PhD (IATA-CSIC, Spain; 2003-2009), international Postdoctoral appointment (Wageningen University (WUR), The Netherlands; 2009-2015), Head of Research Group (University of Burgos (UBU), Spain; 2016-2022), Senior Project Specialist (ITENE, Spain; 2022-2024), and Distinguished Researcher (IATA-CSIC; 2024-2026) mastering an array of multidisciplinary experimental approaches (e.g. microbiology, genetics, cell and molecular biology, biochemistry, food sciences and materials sciences) and managerial skills (preparation and coordination (technical execution and management) of research projects at the interface of industry and academia, and supervision of research teams), to develop an independent career at the cutting edge of biology and materials science. At UBU he has leaded and participated in the obtention of 15 research projects within the H2020 and Horizon Europe programmes, with an accumulated budget of around 5 million euros, where he has been Principal Investigator in 6 of them: NANOGENTOOLS (GA: 691095; UBU budget: 139500 €; completed in 2019), ICARUS-INAS (GA: 946174; UBU budget: 100000 €; completed in 2021), GREENER (GA: 826312; UBU budget: 517501 €; ongoing), DIAGONAL (GA 953152; UBU budget: 509130 €; ongoing), BIOMAC (GA: 952941; UBU budget: 366750 €; ongoing), FreeMe (GA: 101058699; UBU budget: 395312 €; ongoing). Currently he leads ENZYCLE at ITENE (GA: 887913; ITENE budget: 815750 €; ongoing). It must be noticed that 5 of these EU funded projects (NANOGENTOOLS, ICARUS-INAS, GREENER, DIAGONAL and ENZYCLE) were/are coordinated by UBU and ITENE, under his leadership, so he has developed an extensive experience in coordinating large European level collaborative projects. In total Dr Tamayo-Ramos has participated in more than 20 EU funded projects. He is well experienced too in supervising postdoctoral researchers, PhD students, technicians and pre-graduate students. He has dedicated his carreer as a scientist to work in different multidisciplinary and complementary research lines, such as: i) development of fungal factories for the production of novel enzymes and metabolites, ii) developmentof novel food products with enhanced nutritional value, iii) risk assessment of novel (nano)materials, iv) the study of biosystems–surface interactions, and v) the development of effective environmental remediation tools. The results of his scientific activities have been published in more than 50 research articles, around 30 of them published in the last 5 years (half of them as first author and-or corresponding author), with many international collaborators. Dr Tamayo-Ramos maintains a strong bound with his former research groups at WUR and UBU, showing an ability to maintain long lasting international scientific collaborations. At WUR he has been students contact person at the Microbial Systems and Synthetic Biology Laboratory (2012-2015), supervised 6 BSc thesis, 3 MSc thesis, and 1 PhD thesis (PhD student: Jasper Sloothaak; defence date: 09/06/2017; currently working at an industrial research position (Janssen Pharmaceutica) in The Netherlands). At UBU, he has supervised a 1 PhD thesis in the framework of the MSCA-ITN SOLUTION (GA: 721642; PhD student: Brixhilda Domi; defence date: 18/02/2021; currently working at an industrial research position (Stryker) in Ireland), 4 postdoctoral researchers, 6 technicians, and 3 undergraduate students. He has organized three international scientific workshops/conferences, and organizes and participates yearly in different science communication and outreach activities (e.g. “European’s Night of Researchers” and “Open Labs”), in the framework of different EU projects. Regarding technology transfer actions, at UBU he has signed a contract under the framework of the EU Project NEMARCO, providing toxicology analysis services, and at ITENE he leads research projects in the framework of agrofood-waste streams valorization for companies in different sectors. He previously published 2 international patents at IATA and WUR. He is expert evaluator of Project proposals for the European Commission and for the European Science Foundation, and member of the EU NanoSafety Cluster Steering Group. In addition to his scientific background, he has been lecturer in several life sciences fields (functional genomics, environmental studies, microbiology, human nutrition, etc.) at UBU, WUR, the University of the Basque Country (Spain), and the International University of Valencia (Spain). Dr. Tamayo-Ramos received a positive evaluation in teaching and research activities from the National Agency for Quality Assessment and Accreditation of Spain (ANECA) in 2016, as Profesor Contratado Doctor.
